Ed and Jeanine Bottrell hosted a silent auction of "Simsonian" artifacts to raise money for a permanent memorial on the island in Steve's memory and for the Steve Sims Leadership Award scholarship fund.  Ed and Jeanine, along with many others, believed that in light of the tremendous impression that Steve had made on the students of Grosse Ile High School, both in the classroom and on the court and track, that there should be some sort of permanent memorial on the island.  Some of the reasons cited were his commitment to education, dedicated coaching, and an infectious love of life and learning.  The idea of a drinking fountain was decided on because it would benefit the Grosse Ile community, and placing it at a spot along his regular running route where people remembered seeing him on his daily run would be a gentle reminder of their friend.  Steve's family sends a great big Thank You hug to Ed and Jeanine, the many other Friends of Sims, and the Grosse Ile Township.
